Celebrating Independence on Presidents’ Day

Mr. Josh Romalis sings the United States National Anthem during the U.S. Embassy National Day Celebration

On February 18, the U.S. Embassy in Guinea celebrated the 232nd year of independence of the United States of America. Although traditionally celebrated on July 4th, this year the Embassy welcomed guests on President’s Day. The official presentation began with an a cappella singing of the national anthems.  Mr. Riso Bangoura of Gombo Jazz sang a heartfelt rendition of Guinea’s Liberté followed by Associate Peace Corps Director in charge of Small Enterprise Projects Mr. Josh Romalis singing The Star Spangled Banner. As Ambassador Carter noted in his speech, the two presidents honored on this day, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, represent the very basis of the constitutional democracy that Americans enjoy today. The official government of Guinea representative for the event, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, remarked in his speech how Americans are seeing the fruits of these presidents’ labor in the current political contest between Senators Obama and Clinton.
